All thinking begins with a set of observed data. I observe a complex, well balanced, supremely engineered world. To me this leads inexorably to the conclusion there must be intelligent design and therefore an intelligent designer. This suggests also a creator. From this I derive the foundational fact, the one truth, that everyone must deal with. There is a sovereign God. Sovereign means that he (not sex or gender, just a necessary English appellant for a person) has the right and ability to do whatever he decides to do.
God has the right to do as He desires because He created all other things from nothing. He therefore has the right of ownership. He has the right of the designer to direct and mold all that He formed.
His ability is obvious from his demonstrated capacity to create. God has the ability to do whatever he decides to do. There is no power on heaven or earth that can hinder anything that God determines to do.
To deny his right in the end makes one their own lord/God, with all the moral/ethical implications of being god. To deny his ability leads to living a life that ignores him. If there is a sovereign God, why are things so messed up?

One of the rights that is inherent in sovereignty is God’s right to delegate his authority and not to use His power. If God could not limit his authority; if He could not restrict the use of His power, He would not be sovereign. It seems clear both in Scripture and by observing the universe around us that God is not the immediate cause of all that occurs. (From scripture it is clear that there is at least one specific thing that God does not cause, that being temptation. If there is one thing He does not do, this establishes the principle that God is not the immediate cause of all things. If I can find one thing, then it is a matter of determining what else falls in this category.) More in the next blog.
